What is the P90X3 Schedule?

The P90X3 Schedule contains 16 well designed workouts designed by Tony Horton and produced by Beachbody. Many would argue this workout is the best all around home workout routine available, while others will still insist P90 is the best.  If you are looking to get the best all around workout in the shortest amount of time, then P90X3 is one to choose.

The P90X3 schedule has workouts every day of the week for 90 days, though the sunday routine is a stretching routine that is very effective at getting your body back on track for the upcoming week.  The workout is broken up in 3 different months with the easier month at the begining working up to more advanced moves and routines by month three.  The types of workouts vary from Cardio, Yoga, Strength Training, Plyometrics and Stretching.  The workout also includes a calendar and a nutrition guide.

P90X3 vs Insanity Top Workout Routines

P90X3 and Insanity are both produced by BeachBody, but, they are both vastly different.  Insanity was designed by Shaun T, who has also created Hip Hop Abs, T25, CIZE, and several others.  With Insanity he focused on High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT, which essentially means a longer cardio session with a very short recovery time followed by more intense cardio.  HIIT has been shown to burn more calories after a workout, and they tend to be short workouts packed full to the brim of cardio.  Insanity is a 90 day workout with multiple workouts structured to help cut down the fat and improve your cardio conditioning.  You will see amazing results, of which the only equipment needed are a good pair of court shoes, no weights, bands, or pull up bar.

P90X3, as designed by Tony Horton, has a more rounded approach which does involve weights, and a pullup bar or resistance bands, and while he does have some HIIT and plyometric workouts, they are much more balanced and less “Insane”.

Insanity as a workout is great for those already in shape, or those that can handle the extra intensity, while the P90X3 schedule, with the modifier, might be better suited for the the person that hasn’t worked out in a while, while also giving a great full body workout for those who are in good shape.

Both workouts are incredible, so you can’t go wrong, but if you are looking for a total body workout that involves cardio and weights, following the P90X3 schedule will offer the best choice.  To read up on the many Beachbody programs, check out Top Workout Routines, they do a good job breaking them down.

P90X3 vs P90 vs P90X2 vs P90

All of the P90 series were created by Tony Horton, with the X denoting Extreme, and the P90 equaling Power 90, as in the original series.  P90 was recently re-released and updated to use the new set design (much nicer!), better music, and more of a present day beachbody feel.  P90X was the original extreme, and you will often find old school workout people that will constantly argue that P90X was, and is, the best total body home workout routine.  These people also seem to have endless time to do the workouts of which some are around 1.5 hours!  And still have time to go online and argue about this stuff.  Speaking on a personal level, as a dad with three young kids, a full time job and a puppy, I wish I had the luxury of time so I can workout 1.5 hours a day.  That being said I feel, and a lot of others agree, that P90X3, with the shortened time of around 30 minutes a workout, really provides an amazing home body workout.  I’ve done a few of P90X3 routines, like the Challenge, and a few days followed up with a P90X routine like Shoulders and Back, and found that Tony uses a lot of the same moves in both, the differences are there are much longer warmup and cool downs in P90X than in P90X3.  For me, I’m ok with less warm up and cool down, as I’m usually stretching throughout the day anyway.  I also like that it’s condensed as I feel I get a really good workout where after 30 minutes I generally can’t do more.

Is P90X3 a HIIT Workout?

While P90X3 is not very similar to Insanity with the HIIT cardio routines, The P90X3 schedule does have a few workouts that are HIIT, like CVX, though all of the workouts combine exercises that allow you to push the limit and only have very short 30 second breaks in between.  With Tony the intensity is up to you, he offers a calm and humorous approach to the workout, so you will need to push yourself if you want a higher intensity.  In Insanity, Shaun T, by his nature, really pushes you to go harder and faster, and to dig deeper.  So while you could, by definition, call some of P90X3 HIIT, it’s not 100%, and most of the time it’s up to you to push harder to get the same results.  However with the inclusion of weights and muscle confusion, you will see amazing results.  And too, with the variation of the workouts, you will find that your body has an easier time adjusting, as well the workouts aren’t as stressful on your joints, so it’s much easier to redo the entire 90 day workout without time off in between.  With Insanity it’s often a good idea to do another workout after you complete the 90 days to give your body time to recover.

What equipment do you need for P90X3?

With the P90X3 schedule you will need equipment, but you do have choices.  Obviously you need a good pair of court shoes, similar to Insanity, and really any workout that has you moving side to side.  Running shoes are great when your body is moving forward, and they are designed to limit your side to side movement.  Court shoes, like tennis or basketball, are designed to allow your movement to go in any direction, and thus you will find not only will you have great support, but your injuries will be limited.

Other equipment needs consist of resistance bands, pullup bar, and weights.  You actually don’t need all three, having resistance bands is all that is really needed to start.   But if you want to get more out of the workouts, having a few dumbbells and a pullup bar will really help.

A yoga matt is the last item that you might want to purchase, especially if you are working on a hard floor.  This mat is very useful for the Ab Attack, Dynamics, as well as the Yoga, and generally any workout that has ground movement.  You want to make sure your body is safe on the ground and you aren’t going to hurt yourself trying any of the moves.

Tony Horton, born in 1958, is an exercise star.  His routines, from the original 10 minute trainer, to the entire P90 series, has helped Beachbody amass a gigantic amount of revenue over the last 20 years.  Not only does Tony design workouts for Beachbody, but you will often find him workout out pro athletes and doing large classes.  He also has a very likable personality, and has a very self deprecating sense of humor, which makes it easy to do his workouts.  After a while you find you can relate to him, which makes it easier to push yourself as you can see he’s a completely jacked 55 year old who can keep up with all the extremely fit people in his videos.

Amazon always has the best pricing around, and is the most trusted online merchant, and last checked this workout was a little over $100 depending on which option you purchase, but there are times I’ve seen it for less, or even used, which usually is a great deal.  One of the nice things about Beachbody is they let you return it if you aren’t satisfied within 90 days, so you can easily buy the workout and if you find it’s not for you, just return it.

Tony Horton’s Powerstands aren’t required, and are in fact listed as optional in the many P90X3 workouts, but I’ve found that not only do they help me get deeper into my pushups, but also to help place my hands in the right location for each type of pushup.  Before P90X3 I thought I had really understood how to do a pushup, I mean I’ve been doing them since I was a kid, but watching and doing P90X3 over the years I’ve learned several key items I had missed since I was a kid.  From elbow position, hand position, as well as the different types of pushups to target different parts of my chest.

The P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule is perfect for those that want to get big and bulk up, or for those that want to focus this cycle on building muscle mass while not spending as much time on Cardio within the P90X3 series.  This doesn’t mean that you won’t do cardio outside of the workouts,, but it’s going to have less cardio than the P90X3 Classic Workout Schedule. I tend to do my P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule in the morning when I’m not really ready for Cardio, and will do a lunchtime workout at the gym, or a post work cardio session a few days a week.  This way I can really focus on building muscle, which I prefer.

P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule Overview

Now for those new to working out, when I talk about getting big, or building size, this is not building fat.  This is adding muscle which many studies show helps burn more calories.  For my body the more cardio I do, I don’t see much in the way of results, but when I do more muscle building I really see a body transformation.  My wife also experienced the same thing with P90X3, before we both did Insanity and had a blast.  Our cardio improved a lot, we were sweaty messes after each workout, and really Shaun T kicked out butts, but I didn’t really see much of a change in my body.  I felt amazing, and it might be that I was in decent shape before.  Now I did lose a few pounds, and my pants were a little looser, but I didn’t feel transformed.

When my wife and I started doing P90X3, and included all of the weights and pullup bar workouts, we really noticed a difference.  Now granted my shirts started getting a little tighter around the shoulder, which I loved, but my body didn’t grow or shrink, rather I got firmer, and tighter, and my wife noticed her arms getting more defined from all the pushups, pullups and weights.

Why do the P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule?

Adding more weights to your workouts will produce great results, so the Mass schedule might be perfect for you if you’ve already done P90X3 and want to shake it up a bit.  This schedule might be best for those athletes that already have a cardio routine they like and want to focus on weights.  Or like me you might not be ready for a lot of cardio, and just like to focus on building muscles.  If so then this is the right schedule for you.

The P90X3 Lean Workout Schedule is best if you are looking to lean out as perhaps you’ve put on muscle and you want to trim the fat for bathing suit season, or maybe you have put on some weight over the winter, this is the workout to follow.  If you’ve started out with the P90X3 Classic Workout Schedule as I always recommend, then this is the perfect next schedule to try.  This P90X3 Lean Workout Schedule involves more cardio workouts than the classic, with more of MMX and Accelerator, so it will help you burn away that fat and add lean muscle.

Who is the P90X3 Lean Workout Schedule For?

As mentioned above this routine will have less of the strength workouts and focus more on cardio and fat burning, but don’t be alarmed you still will be doing strength workouts, which is why I love P90X3 and will usually follow the P90X3 Lean Workout Schedule at least once a year.  As I’ve gotten older my focus has been less on getting huge and more on what Tony Horton talks about in terms of aging.  He talks a lot about how Balance is key, and I agree.  I’d much rather focus on being more trim but having better agility and balance to counteract what aging is doing to my body.  If you look at Tony Horton, he’s 57 in these videos but looks like he’s in his 30’s, which is what I want when I get older.  I don’t want to have chronic injuries or pain, which is why I’d prefer to be at a lighter weight.  I don’t need huge muscle, but I want to be strong, which is why I love this Lean Workout Schedule as it offers all of those benefits.

What about the other P90X3 Workout Schedules?

Well if you are looking to bulk up and add mass, then the P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule is best for you, if you are starting out we always recommend the P90X3 Classic Workout Schedule, and if you really want to push it you can always try the P90X3 Doubles Workout Schedule.

This is the P90X3 classic workout schedule that most people start with when they start P90X3.  It’s a 90 day workout that mixes in a lot of different types of workouts to target your entire body and provide a good mix of cardio and weight training workouts.  Some of my favorite workouts are the MMX workout, the Challenge, and P90X3 Yoga.  I always recommend everyone start with the classic workout schedule so that they get a good feel for Tony Horton as well as P90X3, and that they get an amazing 90 day workout.  After they’ve done the P90X3 Classic Workout Schedule then I recommend they look at the other schedules like the P90X3 Mass Workout Schedule, and the P90X3 Lean Workout Schedule, and for those that like to crank it up a lot they can try the P90X3 Doubles Workout Schedule for 2 workouts a day!

Tony Horton

Tony Horton has been in the fitness world for many years and knows a lot about motivation, knows a lot about how to get your body in shape, and he also knows how to have fun working out. By following this 90 day schedule you will be fitter and happier than ever.  Tony is much different than Shaun T in that I found Tony to be much more approachable, he show’s many sides of his personality like his humor, intensity, strength, and humility.  To follow a workout routine for 90 days you really need to make sure you like the person leading the videos, as well as enjoy the production and music.  With P90X3 you get the complete package, from an awesome motivator, to amazing sets and music, you will workout and the time will fly by in no time.  This is one exercise workout routine that I have never gotten tired of or even bored.  And I find myself adding one or two workouts into other routines to mix it up.  For example I have had a bad back for the last few weeks so I decided to take it down a notch intensity-wise and created my own routine of Yoga, Isometrix, and Dynamix, to focus less on intense movements, but still have a tough routine that focused on core and stretching.  It’s helped my back a lot and my abs and lower back really appreciated the change of pace.
